Masataka Yoshida, Associate Professor, Tohoku University of Art And Design The 2nd contest was aimed at students from senior high schools, vocational schools, technical schools, universities, and graduate schools, who live or study in one of the six Tohoku prefectures (Aomori Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture), with applications accepted across three categories: the Games Category (a competition for the best proprietary and not-yet officially launched game for Windows PCs or mobile devices), the Sponsor Category (for creating ideas based on the themes supplied by the sponsors), and the OGL Lab CAMP Category (aimed at the participants of the OGL Lab CAMP launched in September 2015). The 1st contest was aimed at students and working professionals from all over the country, with applications accepted across two categories: the Ideas Category (a competition for the best mobile app idea based on themes given out by companies), and the Apps Category (aiming for the best mobile game app to be expanded to overseas markets). “On the day of the contest, there were presentations made by the prize winners of the Ideas Category and the finalists of the Apps Category. In addition, there were panel discussions led by the judges Prof. Endo, Prof. Kogure, and Mr. Yanase, sharing opinions about the many possibilities found within games as seen from the point of view of the creators and the players.     • “Unity Hands-on Seminar A course for beginners who are interested in games development. The course allowed them to gain hands-on experience using Unity to design and program 2D and 3D games.” This seminar was held over three sessions from July to August 2015. Also, there was a social gathering with the lecturers at the end of the seminar, which provided a rare opportunity for students and working professionals to exchange ideas and information based on their common interest in games development. Session 1: July 11th (Sat) – Lecturer: Makoto Ito (Evangelist, Unity Technologies Japan G.K.) Venue: 14th Floor Conference Room, Tohoku Branch, NTT DoCoMo Inc. (DoCoMo Tohoku Building, 1-1-2 Kamisugi, Aoba-ku, Sendai, Japan) Topic 1: GLS for Education “Unity Lecture for Beginners” This session covered the basics of how to use Unity, and participants were able to create a 3D action game where a character is able to jump over obstacles.     • Date and time: September 23rd (Wed) – 25th (Fri), 2015 10:00 – 18:00 Venue: 4th Floor Conference Room, Sendai City War Reconstruction Memorial Hall Lecturer: Patty Toledo, Lab Master, Oulu Game Lab, Oulu University of Applied Sciences Blair Stevenson, Lecturer, Oulu University of Applied Sciences Ryo Hara, Chairman, Miyagi Mobile Society Atsushi Kaneko, President, Picola Inc. GLS held a games development event as part of its partnership with the University of Applied Sciences in Oulu, Finland, based on the curriculum used at Oulu Game Lab (OGL). This event allowed students from Sendai, Tohoku, to experience OGL’s advanced curriculum, also providing an opportunity for them to learn about group development methods, presentation skills, as well as communication with foreigners. OGL’s curriculum is outlined in the diagram below, featuring two gates (reviews) from the creation of game concepts to their actual implementation. Although this overall process generally takes about half a year, for this event it was condensed into three days, with lectures on game development and presentations, covering a wide variety of aspects, from concept creation to design.   • “Rapid Planning Exercises” for improving planning and communication skills

    • Date and time: November 7th, 2015 (Sat) 13:30 – 16:30 Facilitator: Ryo Hara (GLS Executive Secretary, Miyagi Mobile Society Chairman) Venue: Conference Room, Tohoku Branch, NTT DoCoMo Inc. The “Rapid Planning Exercises” lecture was held following the idea of Mr. Masanobu Endo, a lecturer at the Tokyo Polytechnic University and GLS adviser. Rapid planning exercises are a technique used for brushing up the planning skills necessary in games design, such as ideas generation, decision-making, and delivery. In this lecture, participants —whether students or working professionals— were able to experienced the effectiveness of practical learning.
